Winterizing Outdoor Faucets and Hose Bibs: A 15-Minute Job That Prevents a Burst Pipe

Seattle winters don't feel like "burst pipe" weather most of the time. We get long stretches of mild, wet cold that never comes close to freezing. Then, usually with little warning, a cold snap drops temperatures well below freezing for a night or two — and that's exactly when an unprotected outdoor faucet turns into an indoor water problem.

The frustrating part is that preventing it takes about fifteen minutes. Here's what's actually happening inside that pipe, and the step-by-step fix.

Why hose bibs are a weak point

An outdoor faucet — a hose bib, sillcock, or spigot, depending on what you call it — connects to a pipe that runs from inside your conditioned home out through an exterior wall. That short run of pipe near the wall penetration is often the least insulated section of plumbing in the entire house, sitting close to outside air with minimal protection.

Water left inside that pipe when temperatures drop can freeze. Water expands as it freezes, and a rigid pipe has nowhere for that expansion to go — so it cracks or splits. Here's the part that catches people off guard: the crack usually doesn't show itself until the ice thaws. You won't see water at the moment of the freeze. You'll see it days later, when a warm spell melts the ice and water starts flowing through a pipe that no longer holds together, often inside a wall where you can't see it happening until there's already damage.

That delay is why this is worth doing before the first hard freeze, not after you notice a problem.

What you'll need

Step-by-step: winterizing a standard hose bib

  1. Disconnect and drain all garden hoses. A hose left attached traps water in the bib and prevents it from draining properly, defeating the point of everything else on this list. Store hoses somewhere they won't freeze and crack either.

  2. Locate the interior shutoff valve, if your home has one. Many homes — especially newer construction — have a dedicated shutoff valve inside, close to where the hose bib pipe enters the wall, often in a basement, crawl space, or utility area. If yours has one, turn it off.

  3. Open the outdoor faucet and let it drain fully. With the interior valve shut off, open the hose bib outside and let any remaining water drain out completely. Leave it open through winter — an open valve gives any trapped moisture room to expand without pressure buildup, while a closed valve on a pipe with residual water is exactly the setup that cracks.

  4. If there's a bleeder cap on the interior shutoff, open it too. Some shutoff valves have a small cap that releases residual water trapped in the segment between the valve and the outdoor spigot. Not every valve has one, but if yours does, use it — it's a common overlooked step.

  5. Install a foam faucet cover over the hose bib itself. These slip over the spigot and secure with a drawstring or strap. They insulate against the direct cold air hitting the fixture, which matters most during sudden temperature drops rather than steady, moderate cold.

  6. If you don't have an interior shutoff valve, a frost-free sillcock changes the math. Many homes — especially those built or updated in the last couple of decades — have a "frost-free" or "freeze-proof" sillcock, which extends the actual shutoff point well back into the warmer interior wall, angled slightly downward so it drains automatically. If you have one of these, the main job is just disconnecting the hose — the design does most of the rest of the work. If you're not sure which type you have, a faucet that feels warmer several inches back from the spigot opening is usually the sign of a frost-free model.

What if you don't have an interior shutoff and it's not frost-free?

This is the setup most likely to freeze, and it's common in older Puget Sound housing stock that hasn't been updated. A foam cover helps, but it's a partial fix — it slows heat loss from the fixture itself, but doesn't address water sitting in the pipe run behind it. If that describes your situation, it's worth having someone evaluate whether adding a shutoff valve or upgrading to a frost-free sillcock makes sense, particularly if that faucet has a history of freezing or if the wall it's mounted on gets minimal sun and heavy wind exposure.

A few things worth double-checking while you're at it

  • Check the faucet for any existing drips or slow leaks. A dripping bib left through a freeze is worse than a dry one — that moisture is exactly what freezes and expands.
  • Look at any exposed pipe insulation in the crawl space or garage near where the hose bib line runs. If it's missing or deteriorated, that's a related gap worth closing at the same time.
  • Note where your main water shutoff is, separate from this specific fixture. It won't help with a frozen hose bib directly, but knowing its location matters if a freeze does turn into a leak somewhere else in the house.

Fifteen minutes now, or a much longer job later

This isn't a task that requires a special skill or a service call for most homes — it's closer to changing a smoke detector battery in terms of effort. What makes it worth doing deliberately, rather than "when you get around to it," is the mismatch between the cost of skipping it and the cost of doing it: a burst hose bib pipe behind drywall or siding is a water damage and repair job, not a fifteen-minute fix.
